What is Early Head Start?

Early Head Start (EHS) programs support pregnant women and infants and toddlers under the age of 3. Through comprehensive child development and family support, it enables parents to fulfill their roles as caretakers and to move toward self-sufficiency.

Services encompass the full range of a family’s needs. Our goal is to promote the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of infants and toddlers through safe and developmentally enriching caregiving. This prepares children for continued growth and development and eventual success in school and life.

Early Head Start programs also mobilize the local community to provide the resources and environment necessary to ensure extensive, integrated array of services and support for children and families.

Included Services

Beyond free full-day childcare, the comprehensive EHS services include:

  • Conducting ongoing screenings and assessments to ensure each child is making progress
  • Supporting the full inclusion of children with disabilities and building on their strengths
  • Engaging families in their child’s learning and recognizing parents as a child’s first and most influential teacher
  • Engaging parents as their child’s lifelong advocate
  • Ensuring children receive medical, dental, hearing, vision, and behavioral screening
  • Assisting with mental health services for children and families, as needed
  • Providing parenting support and strategies
  • Celebrating the role of fathers and male caregivers through father engagement
  • Assisting families in identifying and reaching their goals and dreams, including those related to finances and economic mobility, housing, employment, and education
